Because it is only through suffering and fear, by pushing to our limits and beyond, that we catch sight of the sublime. But once we see the sublime we cannot go back. We chase it again and again until we begin to recognize it in all things.
comfort is over rated! Also from ultra trail running: 1. It's like fun, only different. 2. It doesn't have to be fun, to be fun. 3. If you are going to be stupid, you better be tough. Happy trails.
I like to travel hard, so to speak. Hike hard. Walk hard, even in a city. Experience nature and culture in dizzying detail. Swim hard, too. I don't enjoy dillydallying on trips, even if it takes two weeks to recuperate afterwards! I'm glad there are more people like me out there.
Type 2 draws each of us differently. Slogging to snow camp not so much. But hauling my pack with the bonus weight of trail clearing hand tools to base camp then cutting things and getting dirty in the hot sun with relentless mosquitoes on the prowl seems to fill that draw early season.
I very much enjoyed this. I've pondered similar questions, usually when wandering the wild and wet high places of Scotland, and I like the way you describe it here. Great photos too.

Ahh! So well put.
Type 2 fun is what keeps us coming back, over and over and over!
Fantastic pictures, especially that last one, thank you for sharing!
Put the CT on your list!

Ha! Love those!
If you are going to be stupid you had better be tough. Thank you. Absolutely love that, I know I will quote it often!
I love it too!

There's no other crew I'd rather do Type 2 Fun with!

So true! I did trail crew for my job for years! And we had so much fun.

Thank you!
As surprised as you seem to be to need hand warmers in June you obviously still had them with you. That's being prepared!
Ha! That's right. Somehow I knew that the county could turn on a dime.
